The film is set in the beginning of World War II, when Poland invaded by the Nazis and the Soviet Union which resulted in Poland eventually divided into two regimes, National Socialism and Communism. In the midst of conflict, Janusz (Jim Sturgess) was accused of spying and sabotage against the communist regime that was controlled the eastern region. Janusz reject these allegations, but after his wife was tortured then finally he resigned to accusations addressed to him at such and sent to the Gulag Janusz, a detention and forced labor camps of the Soviet Union to undergo punishment for 20 years. Janusz sent to the Gulag, located in Siberia, one of the regions in the Soviet Union a very extreme cold climate. Not long in Siberia, Janusz plan to escape. So with careful planning, while preparing supplies, Janusz was preparing to run away with other friends, including a Russian villain, Valka (Colin Farrell), Tamasz which are not only drawing but also the chef Machir a reliable, 17-year-old youth home Poland named Kazik, pastors from Latvia named Voss, a Yugoslav who smart buffoon named Zoran, and finally Mr. Smith (Ed Harris).
